You Never Know When You’ll Need That Trusted Recruiter

It's best practice to stay connected with your trusted recruiter, no matter what. Just in case.

As I sat down today to write, I started thinking about all the people that I’ve worked with over the last 12 years. The one thing I would say to each candidate after they moved was, “This is not the end of our relationship but rather the beginning of our relationship.” Most recruiters tend to be more transactional – close the deal and move on to the next person. H Friedman Search tends to be the exact opposite. Our goal is to make sure that where you were placed is exactly right; and if something’s not working, we need to do something about that. It’s rare that we do but it does happen. The concept is that everyone needs a trusted recruiter, but you just don’t know when.

The Importance Of Staying Connected With That Trusted Recruiter

This week alone I received an inquiry from a firm that I made a presentation to two years ago as well as a couple of teams that I moved years ago. While I was surprised to hear from one of the teams because I knew they were extremely happy, something had changed. Had we not stayed in touch with them over the years it’s unlikely that they would have felt so comfortable calling us at the moment there was something in the wind. Like a doctor or a lawyer, you need to always have a recruiter that you’re comfortable with that’s in your database. Hopefully, you’ve had continual conversations with that trusted recruiter since they placed you. Why? If you must pick up the phone and talk to them about a situation, it should be fresh in their mind as they have been talking to you regularly. If you must get on the phone and explain who you are, where you’re at, and what’s going on – what was the purpose of the relationship that the recruiter was supposed to be building with you?

A Comfortable & Trusted Recruiter Is The Resource To Ask Those Burning Questions

You never know when you’re going to need a recruiter, so it is better to have one on standby that you can bounce ideas off of as things change (which often they do). Not only in the bad times but also in the good times you need to be communicating with your trusted recruiter who specializes in your field. The recruiter can not only share with you your potential job opportunities but more importantly, give you “intel” on what’s happening out in the marketplace. Many of the calls that we field are just specifically that, “What’s it like out there? Are people hiring? Is now a good time for me to make a move?” I could go on for the entire page of questions that may be of interest to anyone in the field of public finance. You should not hesitate to have somebody that can answer those questions for you and know you are comfortable with them because they only have your best interest at heart. This blog may sound self-serving, but that’s not its intent. There are many great and trusted recruiters out there and the purpose of this discussion is to make sure you are working with one.

Now Is The Time

As many of you are aware, the role of the trusted recruiter is not just to place you; but to keep you educated on everything that’s happening within the hiring field of public finance if that’s your area of expertise. You should never hesitate to reach out to your trusted advisor to find out what’s going on in the marketplace. Whether you are a candidate or a hiring manager, it’s particularly important to keep your finger on the pulse of the market. If you are unfortunate enough not to have this type of relationship, I stress upon you to find that trusted advisor before you need them. Because once you need them, things must happen very quickly, and having a relationship already established shortcuts a great deal of the process. 2022 is turning out to be a banner year for hiring managers looking for great candidates. If you’ve ever thought of making a move there is not going to be a better time than now as this is strictly a candidate-driven market as I’ve mentioned over the past blogs.
