What If…You Want To Work After Your Mandatory Retirement?

You’ve reached that magic age of 60, 65, or in some cases 70, but it’s now retirement age whether you want it or not.  You knew this day would come when you signed your employment agreement with the mandatory retirement clause.  But now what?

How It Happens…

They’ve thrown your party, you’ve packed up your offices, and said your goodbyes.  Off to the beach or maybe to the golf greens?  Your days are certainly going to change.  But then…you miss the old grind.  You did not want to have to take your mandatory retirement, and you start to wonder, “Do I have options other than becoming a beach or a golf bum?”  So, you reach back out to your firm and ask, “Is there anything you can do?”  The answer is regrettably no.  However, there are other options available to you with banks or firms that don’t insist on mandatory retirement.

It Doesn’t Have To Be Over With Mandatory Retirement

There are firms out there looking for someone like you.  Someone who knows the ropes and has the lifelong contacts that will continue to manufacture business revenue.  Not all firms are looking to push their senior fellows out the door just because your birthday places you at a new number.  Firms as well as banks are definitely getting away from the mandatory retirement requirement, as they are realizing that even at 70 you still have a lot to offer.

Finding The Right Fit For You

There are positions out there that can be had or created for experienced professionals on either a full-time basis or a contractual basis.  This becomes a firm’s competitive edge when they are hiring younger professionals.  They boast that they have no mandatory retirement at a certain age.  You can work as long as you want.  If you find yourself at a firm that is going to ask you to leave when that birthday comes along, you might want to be proactive and find a position at an employer where that is not going to happen.  There is no magic ceiling that automatically propels you from your current position and sends you to the beach, golf course, or wherever. Let us help you explore your options.
