Retirement, Voluntary Or Mandatory…There Are More Options

You’ve walked the beach, waded in the water, sifted sand through your toes, and reality has finally struck: you’re retired.  You have heard about it, planned for it, and now you’re experiencing it; however, it’s not what you thought.  You’re itching to get back into the game.  Can you?

If There Is A Will, Is There A Way?

For many new retirees, the above scenario is not off base.  For others, mandatory retirement was not something you were eager to experience, nor was voluntary retirement what you expected.  Is there any way back?  The short answer is: in our small sphere of the business world of public finance, there is a way back, and many are taking the steps back into the world.  I am not surprised when I reach out to new retirees about their desire to get back to their old job.  Frankly, they just miss it.  Yet in many cases, the path to their previous home leads to a gate that is closed.  However, a new road is available.  There are ways back in!

Are Seniors Even Needed In This Climate?

For example, there are both public finance banking firms as well as bond counsels where retirement is not mandatory.  Actually they are courting senior bankers and lawyers who still have very strong connections and want to do deals.   In essence, you can gather your retirement compensation and proceed to start a second career in public finance with a new firm. Firms are eagerly looking for senior fellows to join their ranks and mentor younger professionals as they tackle the aging problem directly.  They are not afraid to hire senior bankers or counsel who may want to work a couple more years.

What Can Help Your Chances?

Another combination that is extremely effective before a senior person retires is if he or she teams up with a younger professional, one who they can pass their clients to at their retirement.  When retirement comes, they do exactly that, but with one caveat – they both leave to a new position that is not thrusting mandatory retirement on them. This allows the new firm to get the senior professionals with their lifelong clients, plus a future younger transitioning partner to continue keeping the client when the senior individual does eventually decide to retire for good.  The short answer to our original question is: there is definitely a path if you want to keep your ties in the game and not just sift through the sands of time.  Contact us before you decide to retire. If retired and you feel that itch to get back, we can help with that too.
