Are YOU Today’s “Perfect Hire”?

“Who’s getting hired these days?” This is a question I am continually asked. Is there a persona of the individual that is the “perfect hire”?  Is there a characteristic that stands out over all others that the hiring manager is looking for?  The short answer is yes.  They want that individual who’s completely in control at all times.  They want their own Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice.

Time To Dust Off Your Detective Skills

Not familiar with Sonny or Miami Vice?  He’s that cool, sophisticated, trend-setting vice squad detective.  For those too young to remember, Don Johnson portrayed the detective who was always in control and one step ahead of everyone, and he always got his “man”.  During the interview process, you’re confronted with various people and personalities; however, to get hired, you have to appeal to all of them and address all of their concerns.  You are, in effect, being a detective as you search for the missing clue: the one thing that you will share that everyone gets…then you’re the right person for the job.

Be Vigilant & In Control With Your Answering

Being in control and answering all questions is crucial.  Even skipping one answer can set off thoughts in the hiring manager that can ruin an otherwise great interview.  From the moment you step into that room, as you are introduced to people, you have to be on and remain ON.  It’s a tiring, emotional experience, but you need to leave them wanting more.  Not wondering why a specific question was answered in a way that’s not expected.  Preparation is the key.  Being prepared is just what Don Johnson did before he questioned anyone or went down a particular road (metaphorically in downtown Miami).

Continuously Create Your Own Opportunities

You also need to grab hold of opportunities today that are presented to you.  It’s almost like you need to be a vice grip, locking onto opportunities and being in control of their fruition.  There are fewer positions out there, and those that are being opportunistically created for you need to be grabbed.  They can be adjusted to meet your particular needs, but as offers are fewer, you (the candidate) must be more flexible in your expectations.  Today, a bonus structure is preferred over higher salaries.  Why?  Because firms are willing to pay for proven results, not past behavior.  Past performance gets you the seat at the table, whereas bonus production gets you the real deal.
