Today’s blog is going to be more instructional than most. This is not meant as a catalyst for companies to let people go prematurely, but as a precautionary message to all job seekers with or without staffing and recruiting on their side. There seems to be a growing trend that companies are finding out more and more: their employees may be actively looking around. For that reason alone, as an active job seeker, you must be careful of everything that you do.
I have heard of one candidate that was visiting a firm outside of his market area company, and another situation when someone was leaving the airport and ran into his direct supervisor. I have had candidates say to hiring firms, “I do not want to meet where we can be seen,” and they are seen. Why am I sharing this with you? The answer is that you must be very diligent in your interview process. The walls don’t only have eyes but ears too. When you have staffing and recruiting working, you can avoid most of these situations from occurring to you.
So, what do you do if you are “made?” The truth is the best answer: it may just give your company a wakeup call to your viability of remaining an employee of that firm. On the other hand, it could cause you to be summarily dismissed without any warning. Either one is not a good place to be in.
If you are closing in on an offer where time is the only thing that you are waiting for, you must be prepared to make a move sooner rather than later. Once anyone starts treading the serious path of engaging with another company, anything can and will happen. As I often say in regard to healthy staffing and recruiting practices, you need to follow the Boy Scouts motto of “Be Prepared.” This applies to a company as well as a candidate, because both sides may be forced to change their expected transition plans.
